This is such a bad practice because
- Internet activity is not being monitored.
- No way of stopping connection, because as soon as parent leaves room kid could just plug it back in and be on line in seconds.
- it would be better if his connection was in the living room, or was connected via a router, which could either be unplugged or disabled so you can control access.
